First, a little history…..

All of this is possible by the Lifeline Assistance Program, a program started by the FCC. The Lifeline Assistance program was started back in 1984 to make sure that all Americans could have access to basic communications.  In 1996, the Program started to help Americans get access to landline home phone service. In 2008, the Program was extended to cover cell phone use.

It is important to note that neither government funds nor taxpayer dollars are used to pay for these free phones. The Program and the phones are paid for by the Universal Service Fund. This fund is paid by telecom companies across the country. Those companies charge their customers a fee on their phone bills called the Universal Service Fee.

Safelink International Long Distance

Safelink distinguishes itself by offering the most interesting international long-distance plan offered by a Lifeline phone provider. For customers who opt for the 68 minute plan, they can make calls to more than 100 international locations as the same rate as a local call. If you have friends and family in Canada, China, India, Mexico, The United Kingdom, or any of several other locations, you may call these places using only plan minutes.

Topping-up a Safelink Phone

There are a couple of ways you may add money to a Safelink phone. The first is by going to the TracFone websites and buying a virtual refill card or by visiting a popular retailer where TracFone cards are sold, like Walmart, CVS, Target and Radio Shack.

 The refill cards come in several denominations and Safelink Wireless customers get more for their money as they receive bonuses on their TracFone top ups. For example, when a Safelink customer purchases at $24.99 package, they receive 250 anytime minutes, instead of the 90 minutes written on the card for TracFone users.

How do I Qualify for a Safelink Wireless Phone?

The qualification information is different from state to state, but there are two ways to qualify. You generally, if you participate in a government assistance program like one of the following:

  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Food Stamps
  • Medicaid
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Some states have alternative programs that qualify the participant as well.
